Abstract

The purpose of this review is to assess small-scale native chicken production and its impact on poverty alleviation within rural populations. The review compiles the findings of previously conducted studies on native chicken production systems in specific developing areas. The major contribution of native chicken production systems is the provision of meat and eggs. In addition, it generates disposable income to improve the financial status of rural households and enhance food security. The initial investment required to start raising native chickens is financially accessible to women, thereby promoting the active involvement of women in smallscale farming, particularly in rural settings. There are many problems within this system, including diseases, low production, lack of technical training, and inadequate financial and technical support. In summary, the review findings suggest that small-scale native chicken production systems have the potential to alleviate poverty in rural areas. However, in order for this to
happen, there must be sufficient improvements in overall management and adequate support systems.
